Two of the largest cell phone manufacturers in Japan announced this week they are in discussions with Texas Instruments to align a joint venture over the production of 3G mobile phone chips.
Matsushita, known widely for its Panasonic brand, NEC, and TI are anticipating to come to an agreement later this month. They will also be producing chips for other cell phone makers in and outside of Japan. Analysts predict the venture to capitalize around 10 billion yen ($85 million.)
NEC spokesman Toshinori Arai remarks “It’s true that the five companies are discussing possible cooperation in the area of third-generation mobile phones but nothing has been finalized yet,”
