MobileKick Investigates: The iPhone “Spoof App”

tags  , , ,

There is a new application for the iphone that raises concerns of anti-privacy and potentially illegal and dubious acts to be imposed on the intended spoofee. What I am getting to here people is this application can fake your caller ID, perform voice modulation, and trick victims in to believing they are speaking to you. When in fact it could be your teenager, your frat buddies, or a revenge driven girlfriend who’s hopped up on goof drugs blaming you for the crack addiction.

Here is how the spoof app works:

You can input any contact you have in your iphone, and call the number dialed with that caller id. I have tested this on ATT and T-Mobile, and neither networks seem to be worried about the crimes and identity theft that can be caused when technology gets out of control. However this is not a new issue, and caller id spoofing has been around for some time. A bill was passed to make caller id spoofing illegal by Congress in July 2007. The FCC has demanded customer records of caller id spoofing companies before, but new companies keep popping up.

Although I am all for a good prank, the downside of this issue is way to serious to not be considered a serious offence. It can ruin relationships, trick parents, schools, police stations, and the soul purpose of the application is to cause mayhem. Not to mention the spoofing companies are getting money for people who want to buy more minutes of spoofing. That money should be used to compensate the people whos time they wasted.

[EDIT]I forgot to mention the voice modulation reminds me of the voice from the movie Ransom starring Mel Gibson.[/EDIT]

I agree that this type of activity should definately not be allowed, as there is really no other use than to hinder peoples lifes.
